How the Enneagram Taught Me What I Needed in a Friendship

The Text I Didn’t Send: How the Enneagram Taught Me What I Needed in a Friendship
I texted my friend about her birthday lunch. She never wrote back. A week went by. Nothing.
This happened all the time with us. I'd reach out, she wouldn't respond. Then I'd text again, and she'd say sorry. We'd make plans. Then the whole thing would start over.
This time was different. I was about to send another text when I stopped myself.
I'd been learning about the Enneagram, and I discovered something important about myself. My Enneagram type needs real connection with people. When someone doesn't answer me, I feel left behind and forgotten. Understanding this changed everything.
Learning about my Enneagram type helped me see what I need in friendships: people who respond, who show they care, who make me feel like I matter. This isn't asking too much—it's just knowing what works for me.
I didn't send that second text. I wasn't mad at her. I just realized I was doing all the work to keep our friendship going. That wasn't fair to either of us.
Our friendship didn't end. It just got smaller. I stopped reaching out so much. When we did hang out, it was because we both wanted to. The friendship became more honest, even if it was less frequent.
I made room for friends who texted back, who showed up, who met me halfway.
The Enneagram didn't just help with this one friendship. It helped me understand what I need to feel good in all my relationships. Now I know what healthy friendship looks like for me, and I don't feel bad about wanting that.
Sometimes being a good friend to yourself means letting go of relationships that don't feel good anymore.
